Development of client-server speech translation system on a multi-lingual speech communication platform

چکیده
This paper describes a client-server speech-to-speech translation system developed on a multi-lingual speech communication platform. This platform enables easy assembly of speech communication system from the corresponding software modules (e.g. speech recognition, spoken language machine-translation, speech synthesis). This client-server speech translation system is designed for use at mobile terminals. Terminals and servers are connected via a 3G public mobile phone networks, and speech translation services are available at various places with thin client. This system realizes hands-free communication and robustness for real use of speech translation in noisy environments. A microphone array and new noise suppression technique improves speech recognition performance, and a corpus-based approach enables wide coverage, robustness and portability to new languages and domains. Recent evaluation of the overall system showed that the utterance correctness of speech recognition output achieved 83%, and more than 88% of the utterances are correctly translated for Japanse-English and JapaneseChinese.

Distributed Recognition Used as Platform for Public Testing of Speech Technology Applications
In the paper we present a platform that was developed in our lab for public testing of voice technology tools. The platform utilizes advantages of distributed speech recognition. Its client side provides just basic signal processing operations resulting in a series of static features. These are transmitted to the server for recognition. We describe the techniques used for the data transfer and ...

In this paper we report on our e orts to combine speech and language processing toward multi-lingual spontaneous speech translation. The ongoing work extends our JANUS system e ort toward handling spontaneous spoken discourse and multiple languages. A major objective of this project is to maximize the number of modules, methods and data structures that are language-independent and extensible to...

This paper describes research activities of ETRI in multi-lingual spontaneous speech translation. We have developed Korean-toEnglish, Korean-to-Japanese speech translation system prototype that includes 5,000 word spontaneous Korean speech recognizer, Korean-English and Korean-Japanese translators, and Korean speech synthesizer with spontaneous prosody in the travel planning task. We utilize mu...

We have implemented an interactive, Web-based, chat-style machine translation system, supporting speech recognition and synthesis, localor thirdparty correction of speech recognition and machine translation output, and online learning. The underlying client-server architecture, implemented in Java, provides remote, distributed computation for the translation and speech subsystems. We further de...

Wizard of Oz (WOZ) prototyping employs a human wizard to simulate anticipated functions of a future system. In Natural Language Processing this method is usually used to obtain early feedback on dialogue designs, to collect language corpora, or to explore interaction strategies. Yet, existing tools often require complex client-server configurations and setup routines, or suffer from compatibili...
